Saint Stephen’s Daily Prayers, Sunday, May 8, 2022

Staying Safe and Staying Connected

 Good Morning, Saint Stephen’s Church,

We continue our life of daily prayer. The Lord be with you!

Today is Fourth Sunday in Easter.

Alleluia. Christ is risen.

The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

The Collect for the Day

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Gospel

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 10:22-30:

At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father’s hand. The Father and I are one.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

From Our Prayers of the People

For the special needs and concerns of our congregation.

For people throughout the world: in places of war and strife, and for all victims of violence and oppression.

For the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine, that wisdom and courage may prevail in the cause of peace.

For the people of Ukraine, the people of Russia, and for all who affected by violence and war;

For those who have taken up arms, whether aggressively or defensively, that a spirit of peace may reign in their hearts and in their lands.

For our allies around the world in harm’s way: for those who are still trying to leave Afghanistan and the Ukraine; may God be with them and their families.

For comfort and healing for all who are affected by the Coronavirus around the world:  for physicians, nurses, and all others who minister to the sick and the suffering, and for those administering vaccinations, may God grant them wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience, and may God keep them healthy and safe.

For all historical acts of injustice and oppression: especially those perpetrated against native, Black, Hispanic and various Asian Americans in this abundant land, that we may recognize racism in ourselves, in our church, in our society, and recognize the times we have failed to take action.

For a reverence for the earth as God’s own creation: that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to God’s honor and glory, and for wisdom, guidance, and persistence as we face the challenges of climate change and work for the flourishing and health of all the earth.

For those on the Parish Prayer Chain:  Oonie, Walker, Gerald, Dan, Mary, Bill, Diana, Jackie, Susan, Adrian, Hugh, Craig, Marilyn, Sylvia, Laura, Angelina .

For our Government Leaders: Joseph Biden, President of the United States; Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York State; Gary McCarthy, Mayor of Schenectady.

For our Church Leaders: Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop; Michael G. Smith and Carol Gallagher, Assisting Bishops; James and Dennie, our priests; Pat, our deacon emeritus and Allison, our Lay Reader.

For those who are imprisoned: those particularly vulnerable at this time, especially the women in the Schenectady County Jail.

For Members who request our prayers for strength and healing: Mary Ann, David, Janet, Marilyn, Eunice, Ruth, Mary Frances, Vincent, Priscilla, Joe, and all their families.

For all the blessings of this life.

For our dioceses in the Anglican Communion:  Eglise Anglicane du Rwanda.

For all who have died:  Melanie Kidder, Harry Wemple, Gwendolyn Robbins, Grant Towne, and Donald Atkinson.

For one another.

Something to share

For Mothers

O God, you have taught us through your blessed Son that whoever receives a little child in the name of Christ receives Christ himself:

We give you thanks for the blessing you have bestowed upon all mothers in giving them children. Confirm their joy by a lively sense of your presence with them, and give them calm strength and patient wisdom as they seek to bring their children to love all that is true and noble, just and pure, lovable and gracious, excellent and admirable, following the example of our Lord and Savior.

We remember those mothers who have gone before us into your nearer presence.  May they continually grow in love and service with you.

Recognizing your grace in all things, we thank you for our mothers, for the particular gifts we have through their presence in our lives.  Do for them better things than we can know or ask.  All this we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

The Call

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life:

Such a Way, as gives us breath:

Such a Truth, as ends all strife:

Such a Life, as killeth death.

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength:

Such a Light, as shows a feast:

Such a Feast, as mends in length:

Such a Strength, as makes his guest.

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart:

Such a Joy, as none can move:

Such a Love, as none can part:

Such a Heart, as joyes in love.

Michael Smith will hold a regional confirmation service at All Saints’ Cathedral next Saturday, May 14th at 10am.  A group from St. Stephen’s will be confirmed and others will attend.  If you are interested, perhaps transportation could be arranged.  Please contact me, james.ross.mcd@gmail.com.

Organ Recital – On May 15th at 3pm the nationally known organist and composer, Alfred Fedak and his student, Susan Lohnas, will give an inaugural organ recital at St. Stephen’s.  Come, support the music program at our church and hear our organ in its splendor!

A variety of music will be played for the recital. In Daily Prayers every few days a brief description one of those pieces will be featured.

Elévation                                                                            Léon Boëllman (1862-1897)

The French composer Léon Boëllmann was a student of his famous uncle, Eugène Gigout, and served as organist and choirmaster at the Paris church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul until his untimely death at age 35. Boëllmann left behind a total of 68 published compositions. Although well-crafted, most of his music is no longer performed, with the exception of his Variations Symphoniques for cello and orchestra, and a handful of organ works, including the famous Suite Gothique of 1895. Today’s Elévation in Eb, published in 1883, is a quiet liturgical work meant to be performed during the Catholic mass at the consecration of the bread and wine. Perhaps symbolically, the piece makes use of two lyrical melodies, each presented separately at first, then simultaneously in the work’s final measures.

Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you,

May the wind be at your back,

May the sun shine upon your face,

he rains fall soft upon soft upon your fields,

And until we meet again

May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Be of good courage. We are in this together, and we will be together again soon. God bless you and may God be with us in the days ahead.
